Brief Notes About Wine

How do you determine if you like wine or a particular type of wine? You have to experiment and discover the flavor of each type. You should also learn as much as you can about wine.

Wine always makes an occasion special, whether it is a wedding feast or a dinner for two.

When you decide you are ready to discover wine, you be aware of how to buy, handle, use, and care for your prized wines.

The different kinds of wines are:

Dessert Wines

Dessert wines are usually sweeter than the dessert. These wines are combined with spirits to raise their alcohol content and to increase the sugar concentration. The most common types of dessert wines are Port, Madeira, Sherry, and Vermouth.

Pink Wines

The flavors of rosé and pink wines are between those red and white wines. Pink wines generally have a tart and fruity taste. These wines are made with red wine grapes but there is minimal contact with the skins so their colors are not as deep as red wines.

Red Wines

Red wines have antioxidant properties which are good for protecting the heart. A number of medical studies have shown that drinking a moderate amount of wine daily may reduce heart disease.

WineRed wines have the boldest and deepest flavors because the skins of the grape are used in the winemaking process. The longer the wine is in contact with the skin, the redder the color and the bolder the flavor. Typical red wines include Cabernet Saurvignon, Gamay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Shiraz, and Zinfandel.

White Wines

White wines are made without the skins of grapes. They are more delicate in flavor and aroma and many people introduce themselves to wine by purchasing white wines. White wines can be made from both red and white grapes along as the skin is not intact. Popular white wines include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling.

Purchasing Wine

The taste of wine is improved as it ages. When you purchase wine, you can buy an inexpensive wine for regular use and more expensive wines for special occasions. You can purchase wines of lesser quality and store them until they reach their peak.

Store Wine Properly

When storing wine, keep the following in mind:

Not all wines improve when stored. You should learn as much as you can about wines and purchase ones that can be aged.

White wines mature faster than other wines.

It takes approximately six years for a good, quality red Burgundy to mature. The wine peaks in another six years and declines in another six years.

Wines should be stored in a cool, dark place with temperatures ranging from 7 to 18 degrees centigrade.

The bottles should be stored tilted to keep the corks wet. This prevents the corks from drying. When corks are dry air enters the wine bottle and affects its taste.

Wine and Food

There are no clear cut rules on how to pair wine with food. It depends on your taste and mood. There are some general guidelines: lighter wines are served first and then darker wines. Champagne is often served with appetizers. When eating a salad or light meal, you may want to consider a white wine. If you are eating a heavy meal or a meat such as steak, you will want to serve a red wine. A good dessert wine, especially for a chocolate dessert, is a Port wine.

When discovering wine as a drink for various occasions and meals, you will want to learn as much as you can about the tips in this article. If you store your wine properly, you will ensure its quality and the taste will not be compromised.

Serving a wine to your guests from your own collection will bring a smile to your face.
